How to Get Into London's Most Exclusive Clubs: Insider Tips That Actually Work
The door policies at London's top clubs are genuinely selective. Here's what actually works to get in — and what's a complete waste of time.
The door policies at London's top clubs are genuinely selective. This isn't bottle-service marketing — venues like Tape London hold under 200 people and turn away more than they let in. Here's what actually works to get past the door.
Method 1: Book a Table (Most Reliable)
A table booking is the only guaranteed way into any London club. When you have a reservation, you give your name at the door, skip the entire queue, and walk straight to your table. Every venue on our site works this way.
Why it works:The club has already committed a table to you. They want you inside spending money. The door staff have your name on a list and know you're expected.
Cost: From £1,000 minimum spend (which covers your drinks).
Method 2: Guest List Through a Promoter
Guest list access is the next best option. A promoter adds your name to the venue's guest list for a specific night. You still need to meet the dress code and arrive at a reasonable time, but your name is expected.
Important:Guest list doesn't guarantee entry at the most exclusive venues. At Tape London and Scotch of St James, even guest list names can be turned away if the venue is full or the door staff aren't satisfied with the group.
Method 3: Walk-In (Least Reliable)
Walking up to a Mayfair club without a booking or guest list and hoping to get in is the least reliable method. On quiet weeknights (Tuesday, Wednesday), it's possible. On Fridays and Saturdays, it's a gamble.
What the door staff assess:
- Dress code: Are you dressed to the venue's standard?
- Group composition: Mixed groups tend to do better than all-male groups
- Group size: Smaller groups (2–4) are easier to accommodate than large ones
- Behaviour: Sober, polite, and respectful. Aggressive or overly intoxicated groups are refused immediately.
- Time: Arriving between 10:30–11:30 PM gives you the best chance. Arriving at 1 AM when the venue is full is almost always a no.
The Hardest Doors in London
Ranked by difficulty of getting in without a booking:
- Tape London— Members' club. Under 200 capacity. Without a table booking or membership, your chances are near zero on weekends.
- Scotch of St James— Intimate members' club. Very curated crowd. Walk-ins are extremely rare.
- Cirque Le Soir — Small venue, high demand. Sells out most Saturdays. Walk-in entry is unlikely on weekends.
- The Box — Exclusive theatrical venue with a notoriously selective door policy.
What Doesn't Work
- Name-dropping: Door staff have heard it all. Claiming to know the owner is more likely to get you laughed at than let in.
- Bribing: Offering cash to door staff at Mayfair clubs is insulting and won't work. This isn't a movie.
- Arguing: If you're turned away, accept it. Arguing never reverses the decision and can get you banned.
- Arriving very late: Showing up at 2 AM hoping for a quiet entry is almost always a waste of time.
The Honest Advice
If you're going to the effort of planning a night at an exclusive London club — getting dressed up, coordinating a group, travelling into Mayfair — just book a table. The minimum spend covers your drinks anyway, and it removes all uncertainty. The cost per person for a group of 6–8 is roughly what you'd spend on drinks standing at the bar.
